What Is Progressive Trust? The Smarter Way to Add a Moderation Bot

April 15, 20266 minBy Daryna Fornalska

Here's the scariest moment for a Telegram group admin: giving a new bot permission to delete messages and ban users.

What if it bans a regular member? What if it deletes a legitimate offer in your marketplace group? What if it mistakes your community's inside joke for spam? You've seen the horror stories. You've probably been the horror story.

This is why most admins either don't use moderation bots at all (and drown in spam) or use them with super conservative settings (and still drown in spam, just slightly less).

Progressive trust is a different approach. Instead of "install and pray," it's "install, watch, verify, then trust."

The four levels

Progressive trust works in stages. You start at the safest level and move up as you gain confidence.

Level 1 — Shadow mode. Varta watches everything but touches nothing. When it spots spam, it sends you a private message: "I would have deleted this. Here's why." You review. You learn its judgment. It learns your feedback. Zero risk — nothing changes in your group.

Level 2 — Delete only. Varta can now delete messages it's confident about, but can't ban anyone. If it makes a mistake, the message is gone but the person stays. You get notified of every action. One tap to undo.

Level 3 — Cautious. Varta deletes obvious spam automatically. For edge cases — messages where it's, say, 70% sure — it flags them for you instead of acting. You make the call. This catches the tricky stuff (is this a scam or a legitimate crypto offer?) without the bot guessing.

Level 4 — Autonomous. Full trust. Varta handles everything: deletes spam, restricts suspicious accounts, reports patterns. You get a summary, not a play-by-play. This is the "I forgot I even have a moderation bot" level.

Great discussion today!

Why this matters

Most moderation bots give you two choices: off or on. "On" means the bot has full power from minute one. In a group of 5,000 people, with context the bot doesn't understand yet, during a conversation about a topic that might look like spam to an outsider.

That's like hiring a security guard and giving them a master key on their first day without even showing them around the building.

Progressive trust lets the bot earn its permissions. And because Varta learns from your group — it analyzes your community's context, language, and patterns — those first days of shadow mode aren't just for your peace of mind. They're the bot's training period. By the time you move to autonomous mode, Varta understands what's normal in your group.

How admins actually use it

In practice, most admins do this:

Day 1-2: Shadow mode. Watch the flags roll in. Usually the reaction is "oh wow, it caught that?" because AI sees things keyword filters miss — image spam, phishing links disguised as normal URLs, new accounts mimicking member behavior.

Day 3-4: Delete only. Let it start cleaning. Check notifications. Hit undo on the occasional false positive (rare, but it happens — and Varta remembers each correction).

Week 2+: Cautious or autonomous, depending on comfort level. Some admins stay on cautious forever because they enjoy reviewing edge cases. Others go full autonomous and check in once a week.

There's no pressure to move up. Shadow mode is a perfectly valid permanent setting — you get all the intelligence and make all the decisions yourself. Some admins use it as a "second pair of eyes" even when they have human moderators.

What happens when it makes a mistake

It will. Every system does. The question is what happens next.

In autonomous mode, Varta notifies you when it takes action. If it deleted something it shouldn't have, you tap "undo" — the message is restored, the person is unbanned, and Varta records the correction. Next time it sees something similar, it flags instead of deleting.

You can also explain the mistake. Send a voice message: "That wasn't spam — in our group, people share their Etsy shops and that's fine." Varta adjusts its understanding of your group.

This is fundamentally different from keyword bots where a false positive means you add another exception to a growing list of rules. With progressive trust, corrections make the system smarter, not more complex.

No other bot does this

As of 2026, progressive trust is unique to Varta. Other AI moderation bots (Watchdog, ModerAI) go straight to autonomous mode. Rule-based bots (Rose, Combot) rely on you writing the rules correctly from the start. CAPTCHA bots (Shieldy) don't analyze messages at all.

The "install and pray" approach — where you hope the bot's generic model is good enough for your specific community — is the industry standard. Progressive trust is the alternative for admins who want control without giving up convenience.

Try it yourself

Add Varta to your group. It starts in shadow mode by default — you'll see exactly what it would catch without any risk to your community. No setup, no card, no commands.

If you like what you see, give it more trust. If you don't, remove it. No harm done.
